Our Leaders

Since 1975, Worldwide Adventures has worked with many recognized authorities, elite adventures and mountaineers. All of our leaders have made a significant contribution to our development, while their expertise and enthusiasm have ensured we have main tained the 'leading edge' in adventure travel.

Adrian Burgess
Adrian Burgess has been climbing on big mountains around the world for almost 40 years, including Alaska, Patagonia, the Alps, the Himalaya. He has been on more than 25 Himalayan expeditions and climbed to the summit of Everest in 1989. Now living in Utah, USA, he divides his time between travelling as an inspirational speaker, climbing as a professional mountaineer and guiding our Haute Route and Mont Blanc Expedition.

Dr Jim Duff
Jim is a mountaineer and medical practitioner who enjoys the distinction of having been expedition doctor on three Everest climbs, including the successful Australian ascent in 1984 and the historic British SW Face Expedition in 1975. Jim is our medical adviser and, over the last decade, has supervised the medical courses for our local leaders in Kathmandu. He is also the author of the definitive medical handbook for trekkers in the Himalaya, carried by all our leaders.

Lincoln Hall
Lincoln is one of Australia's most accomplished mountaineers and since 1976 has climbed extensively in the Himalaya, the Andes and Antarctica. He is a well-regarded author and will return to the Everest region this year to lead one of our high altitude treks.

Gary Hayes
Gary has led high altitude climbs for Worldwide Adventures for over a decade, and it would be hard to equal his knowledge of Nepal and the Karakoram. He has pioneered many of our exploratory treks, including a recent traverse of the Sherpani Col while completing a demanding six month traverse of the entire Nepal Himalaya. This year he will lead our "Teshi Lapcha Traverse" and our climb on Chulu West.

Peter Hillary
Peter's long association with the Himalaya needs little introduction. His numerous mountaineering exploits include a successful ascent of Everest in May 1990 Ð 37 years after his father. He led our Sherpani Col Expedition in 1999, and he organized a series of trekking programs to the Everest Base Camp timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest.

Andreas Holland
Andreas makes our South American program special and the envy of other companies. He has lived in South America for over 25 years. Much of this time has been spent in Peru, where he has amassed a wealth of experience that would be hard to equal. His innovative itineraries and desire to share his love of South America are key factors that ensure the success of our outstanding program.

Charlie Holmes
Charlie has been leading high altitude treks and climbs for over 15 years. He divides his time between leads on Mera Peak and Island Peak in Nepal and cycling in Vietnam and Tibet.

Soren Kruse Ledet
Soren was a member of the 1995 Annapurna 4 Expedition and also accompanied Gary Hayes on a six month trek across Nepal. Since then he has led many climbs and treks in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. His keen and enthusiastic nature is thoroughly appreciated by those on his trips.

Andrew Lock
Andrew is one of Australia's leading mountaineers. His impressive resume includes climbs on K2, Nanga Parbat, a solo ascent on Broad Peak and an ascent on Korchenevskaja in the Pamirs. He has also successfully led an expedition on Everest and summitted Dhaulagiri. In between expeditions and Antarctic postings, his easy going nature makes him an ideal choice to lead our high altitude treks in the Karakoram, Pamirs and the Himalaya.

Tim Macartney-Snape
Tim is Australia's best-known mountaineer and a popular Worldwide Adventures leader. He successfully climbed Everest twice, from Tibet in 1984 and in 1990 during his famous "Sea to Summit" Expedition. He has also climbed many other peaks in the Himalaya including Annapurna 2, Ama Dablam, Dunagiri in the Indian Himalaya and Gasherbrum 4 in the Karakoram. Tim is Chairman of the Nepal Eye Program Australia. Tim regularly leads our exploratory treks in Nepal and our "Nanda Devi Exploratory".

Pip Macartney-Snape
Pip's adventurous spirit is reflected in her great passion for the outdoors. She has guided in the European Alps and is an established leader on our climbing trips in Patagonia and Nepal. She has also climbed extensively in the mountains of Chile and Argentina and is now leading our climbs on Aconcagua.

Brigitte Muir
Brigitte has been climbing mountains all over the world for the last 22 years. In May 1997, she became the first Australian woman to climb Mount Everest, and the first Australian to scale the Seven Summits. Details of these expeditions are described in her book Wind in My Hair. She has pioneered our climbs on Aconcagua with her husband Jon and now leads our "Khumbu Traverse" in Nepal.

Jon Muir
Jon is recognized as one of Australia's top mountaineers, as well as one of our most colourful characters. He has been on five Everest expeditions and reached the summit in 1988.

Ian Perlman
After living in Japan for over a decade, Ian lives and breathes this country. His understanding of the language and culture, his familiarity with the backroads and mountain trails, together with his knowledge of Japanese buildings (Ian is a qualified architect), ensure that all our programs to Japan are led by a true expert and enthusiast.

John Shipton
John has run a nursery specializing in bulbs native to the British Isles for 15 years. He has been on several of his own plant hunting expeditions in Chile, Morocco and Turkey. More recently he has been following his father's footsteps in the Himalaya and Patagonia. His special interest in Turkey and its flora has led to his involvement with the WWF''s Indigenous Propagation Project to prevent collection of wild bulbs.

Garry Weare
Garry has been involved with Worldwide Adventures since its inception in the mid-1970s. He is a recognized authority on the Indian Himalaya and his intimate knowledge of the region is documented in his Lonely Planet guidebook Trekking in the Indian Himalaya.
