Our cycling adventure explores the culture and natural environments of these two very different countries. Although they share similar cultural and spiritual histories, more recent histories of these Asian neighbours reveal significant differences. Thailand has changed into the late 20th century, with an advanced infrastructure and well-developed industries. Landlocked Laos, on the other hand, is only now emerging from years of isolation and occupation to establish a strong national identity. This adventure cycling trip offers a rare insight into both of these unique cultures.
We begin by gaining our cycling legs in the quiet alleyways of Bangkok before heading to Chiang Mai to tackle the mountain roads of northern Thailand. Immersing ourselves in the highland landscape we pedal towards the mighty Mekong River that forms the border with Laos. Crossing by boat, we cycle in the remote region of northern Laos, taking in the spectacular scenery, exploring village markets and staying in local guesthouses. Our journey concludes in the picturesque town of Luang Prabang, where Buddhist monks and highland minorities mingle in the cobblestoned streets. |
